Is a combination of stains used in histology which is useful in identifying elastic fibers.

Application: To demonstrate elastic fibers in tissue sections; recommended for vascular pathology. The method is based on the affinity towards elastic fibers displayed by the dye resulting from a reaction between resorcin and basic fuchsin in the presence of ferric chloride. Since this is not an absolutely specific method, other structures such as collagen and basal membranes might be stained. Therefore it is essential to differentiate carefully in order to obtain a selective marked staining of elastic fibers.

N.B!: The clinical interpretation of any staining, or its absence, should be complemented by morphological studies and proper controls, and should be evaluated within the context of the patient’ s clinical history and other diagnostic tests by a qualified pathologist.
